The arctic permafrost has held the attention of scientists around the globe since the beginning discussions of climate change. The question scientists have asked is, what will a rise in global temperature do to a swat of land that’s been frozen since the last ice age? What sort of gases are trapped within the frozen tundra and what will the effects be on the planet if released?

Berkeley students recently put this idea to the test with computer models showing the estimated amount of CO2 that is trapped under frozen tundra and the results do not look good. Initially, scientists thought this excess of CO2 wouldn’t pose a problem, but with the new results that idea has been proven false. The study shows that an instant overdose of CO2 into the atmosphere would trust the earths temperature even higher – making the situation worse… not better. Read the full article here.
